All I Want

All I Want

I am not a starfish
I’m a woman of earth and bone
Of rock and rocky words
Which I do not hide behind
I speak clearly which sometimes
Is perceived as blunt
Blunt is good, there’s no confusion
With blunt
I am not a starfish
I have always had a plan although
Sometimes I float
I suppose that is starfish-ish
We should be flexible when needed
I am not a starfish
But
We both have predators so
We both keep our eyes open
Her five and my two
Starfish will sacrifice a limb
To evade a predator
I will sacrifice complacency
I am not a starfish
I cannot change colors but
I can change my mind
If respectfully presented
with facts that make sense
I am not a starfish but
I swim in turbulent waters when
All I want is the good solid
Earth beneath me
And time

Napwrimo day 8 prompt: In your poem for today, use a simple phrase repeatedly, and then make statements that invert or contradict that phrase.

I did it my way.

  1. So many good lines in this it’s hard to choose. The title made me think immediately of Joni Mitchell “I want to belong to the living”.
    “I speak clearly which sometimes
    Is perceived as blunt
Blunt is good, there’s no confusion
    With blunt”
How I wish I had that skill. But I admire it. (K)
