Fear tempers my love of the letters
Of this world which are as pins
Through the body, like a woman in love
With her own making, infatuated with all
Corners of the blemished universe.
The heart closes its doors, becomes
Smoke, a wispy lie. Following the North Star
Doesn’t lead to freedom anymore but
You can follow it and still get killed.
It’s not law but the sprawl of our separate
Wills that keep us all flowing.

NaPiWriMo Day 5 prompt: “today we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that incorporates at least one of the following: (1) the villanelle form, (2) lines taken from an outside text, and/or (3) phrases that oppose each other in some way.”
I chose to write a Cento.
Credits:
Robin Schiff, Dorianne Laux, Melissa Studdard, Tyree Daye, Mary Karr.
Love how you tackled the prompt!

I like these lines – they are enigmatic. I like enigmatic!
I woke with mine for the day – haven’t read the prompt yet. I did the lines from another text yesterday (I was ahead of the curve!). This is starting, finally, to be fun. I think I’m getting back into the swing. I am remembering how much I like to write, which I haven’t done much of lately. I admire your persistence, and your poetry, which always leaves me a little bit in awe.

I’m so glad you’re getting back into the writing game! I’ll never forget how much you helped me when I first started.
You are too kind but I appreciate your support. I rarely feel like my poems are good enough.

I like the way this flows–I wouldn’t have guessed it was a cento–though I suppose that’s the point. 🙂
“The heart closes its doors, becomes
Smoke, a wispy lie. ” Sad, but elegant.
