Brain Dump

I began working on a CNF piece a few months ago based on an interaction I had with a woman in the jury lounge when I was called up for Federal jury duty. The first three paragraphs flowed out easily. The next couple came weeks later. Now I can’t stand the thought of going back to work on it at all. There are memories of the aftermath of Katrina interspersed and I just don’t want to think about it. It’s Spring, new beginnings, a time of optimism. The thought of revisiting that time is just abhorrent. Hopefully, this is just … Continue reading Brain Dump

Friday Pet Blogging: Little Fat’s Morning Routine

Little Fat adopted us a couple of years ago. He began skulking around the backyard at night scavaging for food. Of course we began feeding him. Since he has a tipped ear we knew he was neutered but was he a trap and release or a dumped or lost pet? Since he wasn’t completely feral acting we think he may have been dumped. There’s a McDonalds behind our neighbors house and we suspect its a dumping site of choice for irresponsible and heartless pet owners. Here, he’s on the way down the ladder that leads to his bed on a … Continue reading Friday Pet Blogging: Little Fat’s Morning Routine

In Praise of Egg in the Hole

I love cooking shows and in the past week or so I’ve seen two touting the foodie virtues of egg in the hole. The Pioneer Woman and Bobby Flay both served up mouth-watering variations on this (apparently) breakfast staple. I made the basic version – just egg and bread and butter – oh, my! I’d recently baked two loaves of homemade bread so I used … Continue reading In Praise of Egg in the Hole

Friday Pet Blogging: Sammy Big Eyes

I took this photo yesterday for the Photoblog 365 project I’m involved in on Instagram. The subject was “affection”. Sammy is probably the most affectionate dog I’ve ever had. He’s always by my side and is liberal with little doggie kisses. He’s a vocal protector of his mamma and his territory. Sometimes the barking gets on my last nerve but how can I chastise a face like that? I’m chahanola on Instagram.  Continue reading Friday Pet Blogging: Sammy Big Eyes

Inspiration Interlude: Diane Ackerman

“The sensory misers will inherit the earth, but first they will make it not worth living on. When you consider something like death, after which we may well go out like a candle flame, then it probably won’t matter if we try too hard, are awkward sometimes, care for one another too deeply, are excessively curious about nature, are too open to experience, enjoy a nonstop expense of the senses in an effort to know life intimately and lovingly.” ― Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses Happy birthday, Diane.
