Late Afternoon Meditation

The magnolia tree drops its leaves in
April because it can.

Big brown crunchy
leaves drop like bombs on every little
struggling green shoot in the earth
trying to raise its winter weak head above
the crust.

The magnolia doesn’t care.
Its huge cupped blooms raise creamy
jubilation to the sky while strong new
green leaves unfurl and challenge the sun.

  1. Beautiful! For me the magnolia is like a landmark of spring. I was once so fascinated with its petals that I recalled the building behind the trees as rose-coloured when it was actually white …

    1. I agree, Martin. My magnolia perfumes the air every spring and I love the blooms. But I hate the falling leaves that I have to rake up several times a week!
