Relieved laughter the day I left,
Rolling in orange and silver –
A getaway to the rest of my life.
Sunlight winked on Ponchartrain
As the city rose over gobbled miles
And I ate it like candy.
Days flew by, seagulls and parrots,
A pilgrim becoming part of,
Settling in.
Another leaving – one family for another,
Opening newborn eyes, pulling toward,
Kicking stale air, curry and cappuccino
Swirled in my wake.
Awashed on a shoreline
Of five years’ time, I flew many distances
But always returned to the nest until
The nest blew apart, scattered bits
And dried up steam settling in new worlds,
Places never dreamed or imagined –
An unwanted leaving, an assimilation forced.

NaPoWriMo, Day 3 prompt:
write something that involves a story or action that unfolds over an appreciable length of time.
A getaway to the rest of my life.
I have a moment like that – I guess we all do. And I can so see New Orleans in this – need to get back down there. It’s been too long. Thank you for this lovely reminder.

An unwanted leaving, an assimilation forced
sometimes that’s the only way, isn’t it?

Lots of movement and life here. Just how I imagine your life to be. One leaving is another coming.
