the deep end

Kick against the sun. The great generator, its spangles and chains. Belly into dusk the silence the still air the curve of trance. Let your shadow shimmy over the floor of the deep end. Mysterious. Cool. Like Jimi plucking steel strings with his teeth and spitting out stones. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shared on dVerse Poets Pub, an online community where poets share their work and support each other. October in July

For the second morning in a row I’ve stepped through my sliding glass doors into the past. This always happens to me in the fall but this is the middle of July. We’ve had a cold front move in – unheard of in summer in New Orleans. When I was a kid and there was crazy weather, old timers would say it’s because those men walked on the moon. They shouldn’t have messed with the moon. Well, we did have a Super Moon a few nights ago so maybe it’s all connected. All I know is it feels lovely on … Continue reading October in July

Blue Fifth Review

I’m very happy to have my poem, “Opal”, in the newest issue of Blue Fifth Review: Blue Five Notebook. This poem is about a car wreck I was in with four other girls, out joy-riding unbeknownst to our parents, when I was about 16. We rolled into a creek, ended upside down and were very lucky to walk away. Big thanks to editors Sam Rasnake and Michelle Elvy. Lots of good writing over there – go read it! Literary Tattoos

I recently discovered Contrariwise: Literary Tattoos, a website that shows literary tattoos people have had inked on their bodies. A tattoo is not something I’m interested in for myself but I do find them interesting and the reasons people get them interesting. I like the one above particularly because it’s from the poem “Antilamentation” by Dorianne Laux, one of my favorite poets and poems. It’s a beautiful  and honest line and a poem all by itself.  I also like the placement of the design because I like the idea of a tattoo being hidden and only revealed to a select … Continue reading Literary Tattoos

The Inspiring and the Inspired

Recently a sister blogger nominated me for a Very Inspiring Blogger Award. It’s been a long time since someone did that and it came at a time when I needed it, too. I needed it because, let’s face it, it’s nice to hear from someone who reads your blog and thinks enough of your writing to take it a step further to let you know, especially when you’re not feeling very inspired. MarinaSofia blogs at Finding Time To Write and I’ve been reading her blog for about a year where she posts her original poetry, book reviews, and generally things … Continue reading The Inspiring and the Inspired
