Muriel Rukeyser: Stories not Atoms
There’s a great essay on The Toast by Laura Passin about Muriel Rukeyser, “Muriel Rukeyser (1913-1980): The Forgotten Woman”. I loved it. Here’s the first paragraph, to whet your appetite: What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open. Muriel Rukeyser wrote that in 1968, even though she’d been splitting the world open for decades already. She’d gone from literary wunderkind to lefty pariah to feminist heroine precisely because of her commitment to telling the truth–about one woman’s life, yes, but also about many, many women’s lives, about the lives that weren’t … Continue reading Muriel Rukeyser: Stories not Atoms

Lots of good things to share today that I’ve read and watched over the past week or so. Enjoy! On The Miscreant, a flash fiction by James Claffey “The Air, Fair Crackling”. Also by James on Flash Fiction Chronicles, “Why I Write Flash Fiction”. I like this quote in the piece: “Flash fiction, ultimately, is about finding your form, discovering the right angle with which to cut the diamond into facets, showing a world in a moment.” On Brain Pickings, Mary Oliver on What Attention Really Means and Her Moving Eulogy to Her Soul Mate”. Literary Tattoos
I recently discovered Contrariwise: Literary Tattoos, a website that shows literary tattoos people have had inked on their bodies. A tattoo is not something I’m interested in for myself but I do find them interesting and the reasons people get them interesting. I like the one above particularly because it’s from the poem “Antilamentation” by Dorianne Laux, one of my favorite poets and poems. It’s a beautiful and honest line and a poem all by itself. I also like the placement of the design because I like the idea of a tattoo being hidden and only revealed to a select … Continue reading Literary Tattoos
The Inspiring and the Inspired
Recently a sister blogger nominated me for a Very Inspiring Blogger Award. It’s been a long time since someone did that and it came at a time when I needed it, too. I needed it because, let’s face it, it’s nice to hear from someone who reads your blog and thinks enough of your writing to take it a step further to let you know, especially when you’re not feeling very inspired. MarinaSofia blogs at Finding Time To Write and I’ve been reading her blog for about a year where she posts her original poetry, book reviews, and generally things … Continue reading The Inspiring and the Inspired
Maya Angelou: You Will Be Missed
Maya Angelou passed away this morning. The world will be a darker place without her but it could be lighter if we’d take her words to heart. This video of her is a favorite of mine. What wisdom she possessed. Originally posted on NOLAFemmes. Edited with BlogPad Pro Continue reading Maya Angelou: You Will Be Missed
Glass Woman Prize: Supporting Women’s Writing
Well, National Poetry Month is over and I’m pleased with myself for writing as much poetry as I did. I posted new poems 22 out of 30 days which is the best I’ve done for NaPoWriMo, ever. Last year I didn’t even attempt it so I feel good about this year’s effort. Not that I think all the poems were good ones, but the exercise made me stretch, made me write when I didn’t feel inspired on my own, made me think hard. I had to look for something to inspire, something I don’t do on a regular basis. The … Continue reading Glass Woman Prize: Supporting Women’s Writing

Reading Women 2014 and Globe Lust
I love this photo. I could live in this room and be perfectly happy because I have a thing for books and globes. I haven’t had a globe since I was 12 and I’ve been thinking a lot lately that I need one in my life. Soon. Preferably an old one with countries with extinct boundaries and forgotten names – much more interesting that way. In fact, I think I’ll go peruse Ebay when I finish this. I’ll let you know what happens. Books. I’ve decided I’m going to commit to reading one book a month because one book is … Continue reading Reading Women 2014 and Globe Lust
